buzzing- since you have a metal pickup cover you should ground it for sure!
The reason it has a separate wire is so you can run a 4 way switch , if the
wire was not separate when you go to run the pickups in series the pickup
cover would be part of the hot lead wire and youll get more noise- if you
touched the pickup cover when it was in series it would be like touching the tip of a guitar cord plugged into the amp
