POST-VAN HALEN HAGAR IS 'LIVIN' IT UP':

Sammy Hagar continues to hit the press in the lead up to his new album release. This from Billboard.com yesterday:
John Benson, Cleveland / Sammy Hagar is gearing up for summer with a new album and a tour about to begin. Two years removed from a Van Halen reunion tour, the Red Rocker says he realized the importance of performing the band's classic material, so he's bringing VH bassist Michael Anthony out on the road for a nightly mid-set digression, billed as The Other Half, into all things Van Hagar.

"We're really having fun with stuff and after the last Van Halen reunion, it doesn't feel much like that may ever happen again for all kinds of reasons," Hagar says. "But I just think I need to play those songs, the fans need to hear those songs and it's just unfair to let it sit and die."
Current plans call for Anthony to arrive on stage about an hour into the Hagar and Wabos (recently shortened from Waboritas) set with his legendary bass solo extravaganza, before the two Van Halen members jam for 60 minutes in a retrospective filled with hits and even a few obscure tunes. Hagar says the idea for "The Other Half" stems from last year's annual Cabo Wabo Cantina birthday party in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, when Anthony showed up onstage unannounced.

As for his next studio album, dubbed Livin' It Up, the 58-year-old artist says he's shopping it to labels. However, fans will hear about a half-dozen of the songs on the 36-date tour, which begins May 5 in Lake Tahoe, Nev.
"'Livin' it Up" is really a lifestyle record," Hagar says. "It's not a metal record at all. I would say it's more American country rock than heavy metal rock, which is the type of music I've always played from Montrose through Van Halen. My intention was to just make a real honest record."
Written over the past year at his home in Cabo San Lucas, the album features original songs such as One Sip and You'll Surrender and The Way We Live, as well as a rocking honky-tonk cover of Toby Keith's I Love This Bar and his version of the Staple Singers' I'll Take You There.
While Hagar's solo prospects appear bright, that's not the case with Van Halen.

"There were some real problems in the band," Hagar says, referring to the reunion tour. "I have to tell you, there were nights I didn't know what song Eddie [Van Halen] was playing. There were times I wanted to kill that guy for what he was playing. I would have left that tour in the middle of it if it wasn't for the professional aspect. He's never going to see my ass again unless he goes and gets himself some help."

STRUMMING WITH VAN HALEN:
VanHalenStore.com has sent out their latest update - this one in part promoting the upcoming Van Halen tribute release Strummin' With The Devil, featuring amongst others, David Lee Roth himself. The blurb:

"You know, it's a crazy idea, but then again, it just might be crazy enough to work". From the get-go, Van Halen proved breathtaking and ballsy in equal measure. Perhaps that's one of the reasons Strummin' With The Devil works so well. In it's own hard-pickin' way, this collection offers a similar sense of musical discovery. Here are some of the most awe-inspiring rock songs ever recorded retooled using a different sort of metal. Come to think about it, bluegrass and Van Halen have much in common - including an emphasis on exceptional instrumental prowess and timeless tales of everyday drama played out in great songs of haunting and enduring power.

To honor Van Halen's seminal achievements, The nation's top bluegrass musicians, including John Jorgenson, David Grisman, BlueHighway, Nashville Bluegrass Band and others, perform trailblazing VH hits. And, incredibly, Diamond Dave himself gives voice to two of the album's cuts!
"My roots were always kind of country," Roth explains in the liner notes. "Not the same country as my first band. Their flag had windmills. Mine had a BBQ pit and a shot glass."

Wait and see comme on dit...

GOOD OL' DAVE TALKING UP THAT REUNION AGAIN:
I had better run this for the record - but I know most Van Halen fans have seen it already after being posted overnight. Lots of e-mails today if I have any inside info. No, absolutely not. No info whatsoever aside from my own basic belief this is just Dave being Dave. I wish him well on his quest, but don't believe there will be any Van Halen activity in the near future. I as much as ayone look forward to the band's return when they are ready, but don't count on it being during 2006...

From Billboard.com --- Roth Predicts Van Halen Comeback
May 25, 2006, 3:00 PM ET, Gary Graff, Detroit.
Now out of one job, on the radio, David Lee Roth is seeking gainful employment in another capacity -- as lead singer of Van Halen. Again.
"I see it absolutely as an inevitability," says Roth, who was deposed by CBS Radio in late April as one of Howard Stern's replacements. "There's contact between the two camps, and they have legitimate management; Irv Azoff is part of their loop now.
"To me, it's not rocket surgery. It's very simple to put together. And as far as hurt feelings and water under the dam, like what's-her-name says to what's-her-name at the end of the movie 'Chicago' -- 'So what? It's showbiz!' So I definitely see it happening."
Despite that claim, Roth -- who was Van Halen's singer from 1974-1985 -- acknowledges that he hasn't seen Edward Van Halen "in a couple of years." The last time Roth recorded with Van Halen was for the group's Best Of Van Halen Volume 1 album in 1996, though there have been periodic rumors ever since [note: confirmed in March by bassist Michael Anthony].
Roth isn't sitting around while he waits for the call, however. He joins the John Jorgensen bluegrass band for two songs -- Jump and Jamie's Cryin' -- on "Strummin' With the Devil: The Southern Side of Van Halen," a bluegrass-styled tribute to Van Halen. Roth calls it "a detour" as well as "an interesting return...Before there was rock 'n' roll, there was me and a single guitar, flat pickin' Doc Watson (songs)." Roth plans to make a number of TV appearances on behalf of the album, which comes out June 6.
Roth is also planning to tour later this summer to play Van Halen hits -- "I'm so proud of that music," he says -- favorites from his solo album and covers. He says he'll leave the banjos and fiddles at home, though.
"I like to bring out the brass section now and the keyboard players and the singers and so forth," Roth explains. "It's probably a little closer to the Rolling Stones' revue than to the early three-piece power trio. But the demand is amazing; I guess I'm lucky enough to be one of those guys now who can point at the map and say 'Let's go here' -- or, rather, my favorite expression, which is 'Let's follow the sun.'"
Listen, smile, agree, and then do whatever the fuck you were gonna do anyway.
