On September 25th i had the good fortune to be able to see Opeth live for the first time. After a surprisingly long journey taking several trains i finally arrived at the venue, waiting in anticipation. Arriving 15 minutes late Opeth arrived onto the stage as the far from patient crowd roared 'Opeth!'. The first set was incredible, Opeth had hired a pianist/backing vocalist to play all the piano parts for the Damnation songs and he was warmly welcomed by the crowd just as one of the Opeth members. They opened with the first track on the Damnation album 'Windowpane' Which triggered a crowd pleasing reaction. Next up was a very modest song 'In my time of need' which is my second favourite song on the first set. The band were musically perfect and managed to spice up the chorus by creating a superb 'building up' prechorus. The next few songs were all from the Damnation album. I enjoyed the album very much but i wanted to hear some older more chilled out Opeth songs too. Finally after the instrumental 'Ending Credits' the band played my favourite mellow Opeth track 'Harvest' The song was spot on and sounded fantastic with Mikael and the Pianist singing in unison. The first set finished with 'Weakness' as the band left for a twenty minute break. Twenty minutes later the quintet arrived and wasted no time breaking into their first song of the second set...'Masters Apprentices' The fans were very pleased by this and the room turned into a mosh pit. Next up was 'The Drapery Falls' 'Deliverance' 'The Leper Affinity' all three songs were played perfectly and sounded even better live than on studio recordings. 'A Fair Judgement' was last up. And once that had finished the crowd wanted more...The band arrived back on to play an oldie 'Demon of the Fall' which unfortunatly will not be on the dvd. I'm not going to hesitate to buy this DVD and neither should you. This was the best concert i have ever been to and i hope that you will enjoy watching as much as i did.
"Recorded at Opeth's critically acclaimed performance at the Shepherd's Bush Empire on 25th September 2003, Opeth's first official DVD release is over 3 hours of majesty, beauty and power that fans have come to expect from this most unique of bands from Sweden. Featuring over two hours of, Swedish Grammy winners, Opeth at their very best in concert, covering material from their much-lauded albums 'Deliverance', 'Damnation' and 2001's 'Blackwater Park'. The DVD also contains over an hour of documentary footage recorded during the making of their now infamous twin alter-ego albums "Deliverance" and "Damnation". Up to Opeth's very highest standards, the DVD once again features beautiful artwork as provided by Travis Smith, and was filmed in High Definition video (far superior to the standard digibeta). Presented in 5.1 surround sound, this is an absolute must have item for any self-respecting Opeth (or any one come to that matter) who is interested in high quality music."
