Tom's Pedal board setup includes two Rockman Midipedals (one set for 1 through 5 and the other for 6 through 10) to select effect presets via the Midi Octopi in the racks. Although his racks appear to be bewildering at first, his setup is not as complex as it looks.
The basic path is as follows: his famous Les Paul Goldtop is almost always set on the lead pickup except for when he does harmonics. Thus, to counter the naturally predominant high frequencies generated by using this pickup, Tom uses a 10 band MXR graphic EQ (he used to use a battery powered 6 band). The actual EQ curve is (L to R with 0 being flat and a range of +6/-6): +6 , +4, +5, +3, 0, -1, +3, +6, +3, 0. After the EQ is a combination Volume/Wah pedal, and a highly modified tube preamped Echoplex tape delay used for his "Hyperspace Pedal". The signal is then sent to the racks by a Nady Wireless. After the Nady Wireless, a Smart Gate for noise reduction, then the clean/distortion is all (Modified?) Rockman Sustainors (with the exception of the "XP100" --- not to be mistaken for the "X100"). The Sustainor uses a programable 15 band EQ in the loop to change sounds, and then a 12 band EQ after the Sustainor, Chorus/Delay, and finally another couple 12 band EQ's (for EQ'ing the stereo image from the Chorus/Delay) for final filtering.
The following is the actual list of Boston's effect racks on the Tour. The racks were divided into 5 sections (A thru E), most of which were the 5 rackspace Modular amps that he used to sell. However, rack "A" is a 35 space rack with a 10 space rack stacked on top. It is apparently used for Piano, organ, strings, and possibly some vocal processing. The lower mod amps for "B" and "C" are almost identical as are the upper mod amps for "D" and "E". Racks "B" and "E" are primaries and "C" and "D" are used as backups, respectively. A "|" represents half rack sized modules in the same rack space and "=" represents a brake between rack cases (ie- seperate rack cases stacked on each other). " * 2" means 2 of the same piece side by side.
