"If you want a Nitro finish get yourself a Nocaster, if the finish does not matter to you get one of the MIM Classics (IMHO a way beter bang for the buck).
I've read several posts where people said that the poly undercoat of the 52 AV RI's is really thin but that's simply not true (at least when it comes to the 52RI's I've seen).
Here you can see the difference in thickness on my 52 AV RI from 1992:
See how the Nitro breaks off in little chunks? Notice the poly underneath? Not exactly what people would call a thin undercoat, huh?
In the years I was using this guitar the Nitro topcoat wore nicely revealing the clear poly undercoat that is virtually undestroyable by living room players like myself. But hey...maybe in 30 years or so when all the Nitro has worn off I have a clear poly Tele with a three piece body!
IMHO Fender has (don't know if they still do) mislabeled this guitar by saying that it's a Nitro guitar when in reality it ain't.
Again...as with all guitars some are great and some are dogs. If you do not care about the type of finish that has been applied check out some of the Mexican Teles because some of the ones I tried out were far surperior to 52 AV RI's. If you're after a real Nitro finish that will age just like the old Teles from the 50's (if that's what you're after) you can only go for the Nocasters or the special thinskin ones.
As for a refin...better sell the guitar, get high-quality parts and have them finished your way! Not worth the hassle IMHO because it's one hell of a job to strip the body of the thick undercoat.
Concerning the sound...I doubt I would hear a difference..."
