OK, most of you probably are most familiar with the Vox Continental and the
Farfisa Combo Compact, but there are plenty of other cool combo organs out
there. Example: The early Doors records are usually a Vox Continental, but
the later ones are the Gibson G101. The Untamed Youth were all about the
Farfisa Combo Compact. The Stems (and this was confirmed by Dom Mariani
when I saw him play a mini-set in NYC a couple weeks back) used a Yamaha
YC-20.
Deb O'Nair used a Vox back in the NYC days of The Fuzztones. (Deb recently
picked up a Fender Contempo.) I believe The Vipers used a Continental or
SuperContinental. The Chesterfield Kings also used a Vox Continental. The
Mosquitos used a Farfisa Combo Compact. The Cheepskates used a Farfisa, but
I'm fairly sure it was a Professional.
By the way, just stating that you like "A Vox" or "A Farfisa" or "An
AceTone" won't be enough... Remember, Vox may have made the Continental, but
they also manufactured the Jaguar, the Vox Jr., the Baroque, etc. Farfisa
made the Combo Compact, the Combo Compact Deluxe, the Fast series, the
Professional series, the Matador, the Bravo, and the VIP series. Despite
the fact that most AceTones are Top-something, they can be fairly different.
Me... Hmm... That's a tough choice. For my own shows, I'm currently using a
Farfisa Fast 3 for combo organ sounds, although I may switch to the Vox
Jaguar or even a Wurlitzer 7300, although the latter is unlikely as I want
to stay with an organ with a bass octave. (That explains why I'm not using
my Vox Continental.)
In fact, I'm a HUGE fan of the Continental. Of course, I also love the Elka
Panther. The one I had was in pretty bad shape, so this summer I traded
that *and* a pretty messed up Farfisa Combo Compact Deluxe to a guy who's
great at fixing them in exchange for that Wurlitzer 7300 in excellent
condition. And, yeah, it was a great trade for us both.
