First You need to decide what type of compressor you like. There are three main camps, optical, Ross, and orange squeezer type.
The optical is generally a more subtle compressor. Many people like these as they are used in studios many times. Some optical style compressors would include the Aphex-punch factory, BBE opto stomp, Diamond etc.
Of all of the optical compressors i've tried I like the Diamond the best. The one pedal I can say for sure I won't be selling, too good!
The Ross style is generally a stronger compressor effect than the optical style, it is extremely popular and has been heard on numerous recordings.
Ross style compressors would be the Keeley Compressors, Analogman-non juicer side, Barge, T-Rex compnova etc. The compnove by T-rex is extremely subtle for a ross style compressor. When I owned this pedal I contacted them to find out if it was an optical comp. They said it was based off of the ross, I would not have believed it had I not talked with them directly.
Extremely subtle for a ross style comp!
I have tried numerous Ross style comps and kept the Keeley 4-knob. I sold my two-knob version and much prefer the four. With the four knob the highs come through on my rig better where the two-knob did not? The other reason I kept this is because I have subtle with the Diamond, I wanted another comp that was more in your face and the Keeley is great for that "country thing."
Next is the Dan Armstrong Juicer style compressor.
A very distinctive and unique sounding compressor. Generally not as subtle as the other comps like the optical comps etc.
These include Pedal Work-Mc Squeeze, Tone Factor-Pulp Mill, BBE-Main squeeze, Tangerine squeeze, Analog man etc.
My suggestion is to try one from each of the different camps and figure out which one best suits you. They are all different and all unique.
