"The origins of the big muff can be traced to the guild foxey lady, a two transistor fuzz box matthews manufactured for guild guitars beginning in '68. another variations of the foxey lady , and precursor to the big muff is the rare EHX axis fuzz. After the success of the EHX LPB1 and muff fuzz, matthews enlisted the aid of bell labs engineer bob meyer to the design a new four transistor fuzz box. The first version of the big muff hax come to be known as the triangle knob big muff.[...] According to matthews, the name was derived from the earlier muff fuzz, which he said described the muffled fuzz that unit produced.Since the big muff came in a larger box and had four transistor instead of two, it was only natural that it should be called big muff"

" What about the big muff Pi ?
Well the frist EH product i had was the LPB-1.Then i had a two transsitor distortion in the same box beacuse it had a muffled, overdriven soun, i called it muff fuzz. Then in 1970 or 1971, we brought out the four transistor big muff, i called it "big muff" to take advantage of the name recognition established from the muff fuzz and that's it".
