une bio pour les bilingues tiré du fans site:
Philip Sayce was born in Wales on June 3, 1976. His family moved to Canada when he was two years old, and Philip grew up in Toronto. His parents listened to music by Eric Clapton, Ry Cooder and Dire Straits, among many other artists. His parents’ love of music inspired Philip’s love for the guitar, and he also learned to play the piano and other instruments. Philip was fifteen years old when he played in his first band. Philip and his best friend, drummer Cassius Pereira, played in bands together when they were in high school, holding band practice in their basements. They started to play around the time that Stevie Ray Vaughan was killed in a helicopter crash, and Vaughan’s untimely death affected Philip deeply as Vaughan was a great inspiration.
They began playing in Toronto clubs as soon as they were old enough. Philip loved Toronto’s bars, where he was able to play whatever he wanted, all night long. The city was a place that allowed his talent and love for music to expand and grow. One of the clubs Philip played at was Grossman's Tavern in Toronto, known for its famous jam sessions with artists such as Robbie Robertson, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Bob Dylan and Jeff Healey. Philip developed a loyal following for his weekly Tuesday night gigs at Grossman’s.
For four years, Philip played with fellow Torontonian Jeff Healey at Healey’s own club on Bathhurst. Healey was also an inspiration to Philip, and the knowledge Philip gained by working with Healey was invaluable to his musical career. Philip’s other musical influences include Jimi Hendrix, Robert Cray, B. B. King, Freddie King, Albert Collins, Buddy Guy - anybody who plays with heart and soul. With Healey, Philip toured the world and played in such places as Ohne Filter, Germany, Finland and the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.
Philip grew famous for his gigs at Toronto clubs from 1992 to 2001, and he developed quite a fan base. Although a CD was released in 1996 with Philip’s recordings under the name, The Philip Sayce Group, Philip felt that it wasn’t a real representation of his music at that time and that it was more like a rough demo.
Looking to further expand his musical horizons, he and then-girlfriend Kelly (now his fiancée), moved to Los Angeles in September of 2001. Not long after that, Philip landed a gig with Uncle Kracker and toured with him for eighteen months. With Uncle Kracker, Philip appeared on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, Regis and Kelly, the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and the CBS Early Show.
Philip also starred in and wrote the music for the 2002 short film, Cockroach Blue, produced and directed by award-winning Robert Crossman. This film was shown at the 2003 Woodstock Film Festival and received high acclaim. You can watch a short clip of this and some of Philips performances here.
In the fall of 2003, Philip unexpectedly met John Shanks at an impromptu jam session in the amp department at Westwood Music in Los Angeles. Coincidentally, just a week before, two time Grammy award winner Melissa Etheridge had said to Shanks that she was looking for a guitar player and was thinking of trying somebody different. John Shanks called up Melissa and said he thought that Philip could be great for her band.
In a radio interview broadcast on December 15, 2003, from KPRI in San Diego, Melissa announced publicly that she had a new guitar player named Philip Sayce. She said he was 27 years old and “very talented – like Stevie Ray Vaughan.” Philip joined Melissa Etheridge and her band for The Lucky Tour, playing to packed venues all through the United States, Europe and Canada. Philip also appeared on Melissa’s “Lucky Live” DVD and CD, released on September 28, 2004. In the Lucky Live DVD, Melissa says that Philip is “geniously talented on the guitar” and that she “is honored to have him in the band.” His experience performing with Melissa and her band has been “awesome!” Philip has the deepest love and respect for Melissa and her family, and he is looking forward to his dear friend’s complete recovery.
