MH: We all know you’re a Les Paul guy. Share with us what other guitars, amps, pedals, and effects you are using as of late.
Steve: I was one of the first Bradshaw guys, but eventually I stopped using them for a number of years. My guitar always sounded better plugging straight into the amp. A number of years ago, though, I was approached by Dave Freeman who has a company out here in L.A. called Rack Systems. He asked to build me an effects system. I told him I’d been down that route, but he said, “If at any point your guitar doesn’t sound as good as it does plugging straight into the amp, you don’t have to purchase any of it.”
MH: That’s a tall order…
Steve: Yeah, I thought that was a win-win situation. But he did it. There are a couple of things I was using on the road that we were the first to go in, one of which was Axxess Electronics, a relay switcher. The actual pedal switches are made by a company called Skystrip, of Denmark. I know The Edge is using one of those systems now, and I think John Petrucci is too. They’re kind of becoming the “cool” company. So, I have a lot of effects in there; a lot of Line 6 stuff, as well as some older vintage stuff. I’ve got an old MXR Phase 90, two Moak pedals, a morph pedal, and a Moogerfooger ring modulator. As far as the amps I use, the system allows me to switch between them, so for a cleaner sound I use an OD 100 by Custom Audio Electronics, which is John Suhr’s. For heavy stuff I’ve been using the Randall amps. For years I used Peavey 5150s.
MH: Which Randalls are you using?
Steve: The RM 100 or something. It’s the one with the three preamps you can switch out. Dave Freedman eventually ended up building me an actual preamp that I use for that.
MH: Are you still a Marshall guy at times?
Steve: For recording, absolutely. I still have my old Plexi’s, and I have some JCM 800s and some old Park amps. Yeah, it’s a bit different using a Marshall on the road. To me a Marshall is the ultimate rhythm guitar amp, but I need something that I can get a lot of different sounds out of. So far, this Randall has really been great.
