Ahhhh, the Young Guitar piece. We just did that last month when we were in Japan. Nothing like being super busy trying to get ready for a show in an hour and having a guy want to take pictures of the front and back of EVERY guitar you have on the road. At least you can see my Stewie hanging from the guitar vault! JP and I pray to him every night before the show... don't ask. I gotta get a copy of that mag.
Yeah, sometimes JP uses the Zakk for a little different edge. This all came about while we were in Europe last Sept and we wanted to try something different. The Road King glitches when you switch channels and is ESPECIALLY bad when you change from say Modern on one channel to Vintage on another. John decided to go with one channel for rhythm and leads like he does on G3, so we broke out a modded DS-1 that someone gave him in a meet and greet on Gigantour. We were only using it as a volume boost with the volume cranked, and the gain and tone rolled all the way back. We then got a few more pedals when John went to a music store in France and borrowed some stuff to check out. When he pulled out the Zakk, I just started laughing. He didn't think it was going to be that great either, but we tried it out anyway. It ended up being pretty cool, adding a cool mid range sizzle. Volume at 3 o'clock, gain at 9 o'clock and tone probably rolled back a bit. A few minutes after that pic was taken... or maybe it was the second night in Tokyo... whatever, the Deja Vibe and the trem came out and were replaced with the DS-1 and the regular Boss phaser that was in there before. It made the Roland guy smile, at least.
