Originally started up as opposition to Fender, Musicman amps were, in fact, designed and made by ex-Fender employees. Even Leo Fender himself was on the team in a consultancy position, although not, I believe, actually involved in the creation of these amps. This particular example is one of the earlier series, claimed by many to be vastly superior to the later models. The Fender influence shows right through its design, not in the least in its use of tubes, in an era when solid state amps were popular. Cosmetically, that influence is immediately obvious. The HD130 is an amp that completely polarized its users….you either loved it or hated it. Taken firmly under wing by Jazz and Country players, I wouldn’t really recommend it for the FFW brigade – ("Foot on the Foldback Wedge"), it’s simply just too sweet and clear. If you’re the sort of player who finds a Marshall way too grungy and limiting, and a Fender just too sharp and clean, this might just be the ideal amp for you. These Musicman amps have now achieved a sort of cult status, and are now considered very collectable.
