TOM UNVEILS HIS NEW SIGNITURE GIBSON ES-333
Your new guitar is doesn't look very punk rock. What made you decide to go for a semi-hollow body?
"I don't know, I just thought semi-hollow bodies were rad-looking, like cool old rock 'n' roll guitars. I figured if I adapted one I could add my own influences to it and make it look a little more current."
How have you made it your own?
"I just told Gibson that is had to be accessible from the back, because with most semi-hollow bodies you can only get in through the f-holes, which makes them really hard to work on/ So mine has a back plate that you can take off."
What other features did you request?
"I wanted locking tuners on it. I wanted one knob, one pickup - and a racing stripe down the middle. Then I got them to stuff it with some foam and put a good pickup in there. It's ended up sounding really gigantic."
What kind of pickup is it?
"I don't even know. It's an old Gibson pickup from the 70s that was so loud and obnoxious that they discontinued it because no-one liked it back then. But you try it now and it's crazy. It's awesome. It sounds so good. In the studio we tried out three different pickups that Gibson sent us and this one was the best."
You used to be endorsed by Fender. We're they pissed off with you for switching sides?
"I don't think so. I told them and they were cool with it. I don't want them to be mad, because I loved - and still love - my Stratocaster. I think it was a rad guitar. I wish I could play both at the same time, but that won't happen. I guess the reason I switched was I just wanted a guitar that was unique to me
