what tubes does the red bear use?
quoted from the mk60/mk120 operations guide: "the red bear amplifier has been designed with a special set of pre-amp tubes. these are essentially the same tube as a typical 12ax7 tube, with an extra connection to ground to maintain an even better signal to noise ratio than ordinary tubes. when changing your pre-amp tubes (usually once a year) please ask your red bear dealer for: red bear pre-amp tubes part #rbp-tu01. the tube itself is designated as the 6n2p-ev (in russian, 6h2n-eb)." stock power tubes are something like 6n3ce. it is written in the pamphlet that the power tubes are 5881.
it is important to note that the "n" is actually the greek/cyrillic letter "pi." this means the preamp tubes are actually 6h2pi. the 5881 power tubes' original number is 6pi3-ce, and should be the same tube as was supplied originally in that amp. they are a shorter bulb version of the 6l6. a good place to ask about these and to purchase them is triode electronics. if you have any questions they are the ones to ask as they really know tubes.
the more recent novik amps were said to use 12ax7wa preamp tubes and 5881/6l6 for power. the 12ax7wa tubes are identical to the russian 6n2p and the 5881 is identical to the russian 6p3se and should work in red bear amps.
what are some substitutes for these tubes?
the 6n2p-ev/6h2n-eb is very rare. not many have had success in locating it. the information obtained from svetlana about the american 6jk8 being a more common tube that could be used as a substitute has recently been proven to be false. the 6jk8 does not work as a substitute. the svetlana 6n1p will work in the 6n2p-ev sockets, but is a medium-gain tube as oppossed to the high-gain 6n2p-ev. svetlana sv6l6gc can work in place of the 5881 power tubes without rebiasing. novik currently uses 12ax7wa for preamp tubes (an equivalent to the russian 6n2p) and should work as a replacement in red bear amps.
